Windows 93 | 25/11/2024 | 25/11/2024 |
Windows 93 is a pet project i'm working on. it's a pretty primitive, clunky, and lackluster thing, but at least it's something. Essentialy, it's just a modification pack for the MS-DOS Graphical User Interface, Windows 3.1. I'm tweaking and tinkering away at a virtual machine of Windows 3.1 and making it into something comparable to Windows 95, at least visualy. It's not changing the architecture, it's still 16-Bit, but its looking cool! What new features does Windows 93 have over Windows 3.1? - Calmira II's Windows 95 user interface overlay for Windows 3.1 gives the system the look and general feel of Windows 95. - Overhualted Windows 95 system graphics for window buttons, message icons, and scrollbars. - Custom 'Windows 93' System Color Scheme - 'Win93kit' included on hard disk; provides the programs, applications, and graphics used in the patchwork development of Windows 93. - MS-DOS automaticaly launches into Windows and the overlaying Calmira UI via modifications to 'AUTOEXEC.BAT' and the 'StartUp' folder. - Internet Explorer 3 is blundled with the system; not intergrated though. *cough cough Windows 98* - Generic CD-ROM driver preinstalled - System fonts for Icons, Desktop, and Title Bars changed to 'MS Sans Serif' / SSERIFE.FON
Now that brief laundry list of features has been addressed; let me show you some screenshots of the Windows 93 project!

WIN.INI.
There's how many fonts?! how is SSERIFE.FON MS SANS SERIF?
Using Windows Write to find the exact font to be used for Windows 93 UI in WIN.INI
WIN.INI in all its fullscreen glory, trying to pinpoint what font abbrviations connect to what full font name
Eventual result of getting the font to work, still working on making title bars bold though..

..And a snappy file-finding service to match!
A welcome letter upon startup, addressing What's New, Feature List, and What's to come! What tools were used for the development of Windows 93?I'll be very honest with you, and i'm sure you already know.. but Windows 93 is barley made up of my own work. It's just my efforts at a patchwork OS GUI revamp to make Windows 3.1 look more like Windows 95, and even then its execution is clunky and underwhelming. However, i would like to credit these very nessasary and quite useful tools for praticaly making Windows 93 possible: A very impressive graphical overlay for Windows 3.1, mimicking the design, function, and general feel of Windows 95. Like their work? download Calmira II for your Windows 3.1 system for FREE! PtchDrv (PatchDriver) An in-depth and very articulate tool for patchign Windows 3.1 VGA drivers, conveniently bundled with replacable Windows 95 themed grahpics for Windows, Error and Alert Icons, and other general stuff. This tool can be downloaded here. Logo320 A neat little tool for editing, replacing, and veiwing the Windows 3.1 Splash Screen. I'm still working on importing a custom load screen for Windows 93, but previous errors and bricked the system and I could'nt be bothered to copy-aste the stumped .ini files. This tool can be downloaded here. Brw45 (Resoruce Workshop) - UNUSED similar in function and use to PtchDrv, also known as PatchDrvier, but focuses on editing individual bitmap images from provided vga.drv and other relevant driver files. This tool proved no longer nessasary and was replaced by patchDriver and it's bundled bitmap replacements. This tool can be downloaded here. DISCLAIM!!Also i think it should be made clear if it wasnt already very obvious yet, but i dont own Windows 3.1, Microsoft does, and all the used tools that made Windows 93 possible belong to their respective owners. This is just a pet-project to tinker with and see how much i can customize Windows 3.1. |
