General Talk I loved futurama and remember spending much of my time at 16-17 watching the crap out of it. watched about 10 episodes or more a day and then watching all the fan-made commentaries and retrospetives on the seasons on youtube. The show was written by high-up math graduates from the fanciest of universities, stuffing funny little mathimatical and science-fiction jokes into the background of the majority of scenes. When i was a kid i defently loved the simpsons more than futurama, even going as far as to just deny is was good at all because it looked like a 'ripoff', but how wrong i was, haha. Given that the show was cancelled and renewed so many times, ive split my thoughts on the show into four sections which are listed in order below: |
|
The Initial Run (1999-2003) On March 28th 1999, FOX was blessed with Futurama, only to get immediate buyers remorse due to the crude alignement of their predicted target demographic, amongst other things. But aside from production issues, the show was at is best here. The plots and jokes were at their finest with the most memorable quotes and moments originating from the first interupted run. The first episode alone was pretty good at setting the scene and pace of the show, with some 25 year-old nobody looser getting prank-called into deliveing a pizza to a cyrogenic center on new years eve 1999, only to fall of his chair and into a thousand year suspension with him waking up on the eve of 2999. After his stumble into the new futuristic world its clear most things have not changed besides the astethic, which i think was a intentional decision to avoid the missery and complications of 'realistic futurism' like when people try to make time travel stories and stuff like that. He meets a jerk-ass cynical robot called Bender and they both end up evading Leelaa who was some cyrogenic manager or something, with them all loosing their jobs and succesfully leeching of the new job availability from Fry's future uncle or something. The point is from the first episode alone you know what this show is going to be about and the stories that follow are pretty funny too, just putting a sterotypical futuristic coat of paint on a world one-thousand years in the future where pretty much nothing as changed. |
